Guitar lessons for all ages in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
LESSONS
As an instructor, my goal is to provide the highest quality education possible. Learning an instrument can be a daunting and confusing endeavor, and it’s my aim to make that process as easy and simple as possible. Lessons are tailored to each student’s needs, goals, and abilities. Rather than a “one-size-fits-all” approach to teaching, I strive to help each student identify their musical objectives and then achieve them through small, attainable steps. I truly believe anyone with a desire and willingness to put in the work can reach whatever goals they have!
WHAT I OFFER
I teach private lessons for guitar, bass, and banjo. I offer lessons both in-person at my home studio as well as remotely through video chat. I teach a wide variety of styles on both acoustic and electric guitar including blues, classical, rock, and folk. Depending on the student’s abilities and goals, I also incorporate concepts such as a practical understanding of music theory, note reading, and improvising. I teach students of all ages and skill levels, and I’m a firm believer that it’s never too early or too late to learn an instrument!
ONLINE LESSONS
Online lessons work just like in-person lessons, but without the student in my studio. Additional equipment each student needs to take online classes are:
-
Computer or phone with a camera
-
Zoom, Skype, or FaceTime capabilities
Online lessons are a great alternative to traditional in-person lessons for those who live outside the Albuquerque area or just prefer the convenience of taking lessons from anywhere with an internet connection.
PARENTS
I have extensive experience teaching kids of all ages. All lessons and course materials are customized for each student based on their age and abilities.
The first lesson with a new student is free, and is a chance for you and your child to meet me and get a feel for my teaching style. I do my best to keep lessons fun and interesting while also helping students grow in their musical abilities.
For younger students, a 1/2 or 3/4 size guitar may work better for them as they're easier for small hands to play. I'm always happy to give you advice on what instrument would be properly suited for your child!
At my home studio where I give lessons, there is a comfortable waiting area for parents or siblings to wait during the lesson, or plenty of room for parents to sit in on the lessons if they'd like.

WHAT DO I NEED?
Students will need an instrument that is easily playable and size appropriate. This doesn't mean it needs to be expensive, but some brands and styles tend to work better than others. Especially for younger students, a 1/2 or 3/4 size guitar may work better as they're easier for small hands to play.
If you don't already have an instrument and would like advice on what would work well for you don't hesitate to ask!
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
The first lesson with a new student is free of charge, and is a chance for us to meet and get to know each other, as well as let you get a feel for my teaching style.
After that, lessons are $160 per month for four 30-minute lessons or $320 for four 60-minute lessons.
Initial books and other teaching materials needed to get started are also included free of charge.
ABOUT CLAY
Music has always been an integral part of my life. At the age of five, I began taking guitar lessons, and the love for it hasn't faded since.
I’ve studied and enjoy playing a wide range of styles, including classical, blues, rock, and bluegrass. I also really enjoy studying music theory in order to explore and understand new styles and concepts.
I have had the opportunity to collaborate with many groups in New Mexico and Texas, traveling to perform and compete at festivals, as well as write and record professionally.
These experiences have given me a unique perspective on teaching music in a way that's simple to learn, yet comprehensive.
My intention is always to help build a foundation of knowledge and skills to enable students to pursue whatever musical interests they have. I believe that it's never too early or late to begin learning an instrument or develop a passion for one.
When I’m not playing or teaching music, I like to hunt, hike, and backpack across New Mexico and the southwest.
